In August, as the turmoil created by the Sinclair tests in Baltimore reached it peak, two press releases about new "miracle" 8-VSB demodulator chips surfaced. The announcements had a predictably chilling effect on the 8-VSB/COFDM debate; if the PR statements are to be believed, these chips will put 8-VSB on a nearly equal footing with COFDM...one release even suggested that mobile reception was possible--this was later clarified as "walkabout portability."

Both chips employ blind equalization technology developed by Sarnoff Labs, which played a major role in the development of the Grand Alliance system and ATSC standard. Motorola introduced the MCT2100. Nxtwave, a new startup joint venture with Sarnoff, announced the NXT2000. Both companies have been invited by Sinclair to bring their products to Baltimore to see if the claims can be substantiated.
