You state that fall as if its a minor event.A 29% drop in share value is major and thats what myself and others are upset about.

mike, good points. mu said they are raising contract prices to $9. maybe they are blowing smoke, however, on a 128 mb box that adds $64 in component cost. not insignificant.

technology improvement and efficiencies lead to greater supply (eg, dram). the greater supply tends to lead to supply and demand imbalances and lower prices (thank goodness for lower costs, too).

prices and efficiencies are normally related, but not necessarily so. prices always decline due to supply / demand dynamics unless there is some kind of marketing gimmick (usually very short term).

i tend to agree that mu is misleading folks about their $9 contract prices. i think dell gets a better deal. if they don't, though, that $64 will hurt. that is, until they go to 64 mb in their boxes, just as you suggest ;-)

good luck.

mike, i think you will find this article interesting...

dell to pay $9 for each chip - up $5. that subtracts $40 from profit for each 64 mb module included w/ a box.

i'd venture that is more than 50% of what dell makes per box on a net basis.
