People often quote as support for evolution that we share 9x% of our genes / chromosomes with chimps, can anyone tell me the figure for a salamander or equally distant species. I am under the impression it is 8x%, but do not know the figure. If anyone knows this figure please tell me.

thanks
Bob

re: the age of the earth
If the Universe is less than 10,000 years old, then Geology, Paleontology, Astronomy, Physics (beyond Newtonian), are just as flawed as Evolution (since they all make similar assumptions about the age of the Universe).

Your chemist knows more about chemistry than he does evolution. Bob lets try this with the beetles.... Why assume that the beetles must start with such a pure form of this defense? For starters perhaps a weak solution of chemicals sprayed together producing a skunk like effect would drive away enough predators so as to create an advantage. As the eons passed some beetles produced a more formidable concoction that sprayed from different tubes only igniting when they combined in mid air to produce the desired effect. Still not perfect.....But better...More eons.... New beetles with one tube ...no inhibitor... not good...die off.....more eons [remember the beauty of evolution is that we have many many eons to play with here ] new beetle with one tube and inhibitor with short life span ...sort of like an inhibitor that degrades rapidly..... Works but lots of accidents blowing up beetles....better but.... far from perfect.... Lucky beetle comes up with the anti inhibitor again imperfect given the rest of the system but still better ....more eons all of the above are perfected to reach today's Bombardier. This is really no different than any other evolutionary change . Each small adaptation must only show an improvement from what went before.
Bob there was a time when I thought like your self... That all this is to far fetched.. But the key to my change in thinking was in grasping the enormous potential of time ...One hundred million years....this was a concept waaaaay outside any frame of reference....Still I cannot grasp it. But the arithmetic is there. We are talking Lots of beetles here Bob. Each new generation of beetles has the potential for change.
Evolution's beauty lies in her simplicity and inevitability. It is no wonder that we debate that so simple a concept is capable of creating such amazing complexity and beauty. How many millions of would be bombardiers were shed by our current success story? How many millions of like concepts were found wanting and left by the way side? .... Somebody has to win the lottery . Yes sadly not you nor I. But in the end.... lottery winner stands tall and says "what are the odds?"
