Probably, but this deal had only one motivator: WCOM needing a a mobile wireless network.

Its a foregone conclusion that the Sprint internet backbone will have to go;

WCOM will ultimately divest the local telco portions of Sprint (they don't want the universal service obligation);

It's at least 50/50 that DOJ says that the domestic LD combination is anti-competitive and hence the LD portion would/will have to be spun off or sold;

(This is a deal 6-12 months too early - if even 1 RBOC had been granted approval to enter LD - FCC and DOJ opposition would be much less)

The EU will probably also find the deal anti-competitive hence giving more bargaining power to France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom regarding the breakup of Global One.

What's left?

Sprint PCS.

The only question is whether WCOM can get others to pay the same premium its paying for the divested assets.
