In theory, FON could sell its backbone but keep a single fiber or two (like Williams did several years ago) for use strictly as a redundant network should WCOM suffer an outage in its primary backbone. This could be a condition of the sale of the FON backbone. Sure, FON would get less money for the system, but the combined WCOM/FON internet backbone would offer something no other carrier has: guaranteed redundancy. Kennard can't complain about that, because the bulk of FON's backbone would have been sold, yet e-commerce is secured due to this redundancy. It would give WCOM a huge selling point with potential customers, and an advantage that no other carrier would be likely to match in the near future, if ever. Any thoughts on the viability of this?
