I would suspect that the torque remaining relatively constant in a set of sticks would be the determining factor in placing a value on the measurement ..... here you are ..... machinedesign.com but it is a rather simple single page description ......

I have no idea what they do with it, You could not find the full article ehh. I look into it. Only use I can think of would be a warning to when one might slip off the bar stool......
