Tom, regarding your crashes: I'm not experienced in this compared to some others here. But I can offer my thoughts.

Uninstall Norton Crash Guard. I have done so and have heard from others who say it hurts more than it helps. Consider that Crash Guard must constantly monitor things, thus interfering when you least want it to.

Second: if your modem is a Winmodem [using software] it MAY
provoke crashes. I've heard that - have NO experience here.

If it was me I'd strongly consider moving Excel and other
things less critical to your trading to a second PC.

I think if you have all that stuff running the whole day,
it's no wonder the computer gets confused. I heard NT is
more crash resistant - but know nothing about NT.

Let's see what the more experienced people have to say.

G.

Tom, my suggestion would be to migrate to Windows NT. YOu might wait for Windows 2000 - the next version of NT - which is supposed to facilitate multi-monitors better than NT4.0.

I moved to NT a year ago or so - much better with regard to crashes and multi-tasking.

hi tom,

did you install just norton crashguard, or was that installed as a component of norton utilities or systemworks? if cg was part of the larger utility suite, try running windoctor and/or system doctor.

regarding the likelihood that cg is contributing to your system's instability... yes, i myself have cg installed but keep it disabled most of the time. but let's be real here, the product must have some merit and some good points or it wouldn't be part of the best-selling and highest recommended software suite available. what am i saying here? i'm saying that depending upon umpteen hundred variables, cg works for some and not for others. you are the best judge of whether it helps you.

also, make sure that you are performing a regular routine of emptying cache and temp internet files and also running defrag and scandisk to optimize your system.

:)

Tom. Welcome back.
Solution to your computer problem: Switch to WinNT and increase your RAM.

My old computer (similar configuration to yours) used to crash several times a day. In addition, there were certain tasks or combination of tasks that I had to avoid; otherwise the computer would crash immediately.

My "new" WinNT computer crashes only 1-2 times a week if run continuously, and less frequently if I turn it off every night. (I know I am setting a world record in crashing WinNT). Now I can even do much more without crashing the computer.

Windows OS's and these browsers are buggy. One of the problems is memory leak. The longer you run intensive tasks with your computer, the more memory leaks out and become unavailable. When the computer has insufficient memory left, it crashes.

My NT machine is a dual-PII with 512 MB RAM (that is the maximum my old "new" computer can take).

Taking the cover off your computer destroys the convection design of your computer case, and can increase the temperature of critical parts and burn the computer.

You use dual monitors with WinNT-2000,
or alternatively with WinNT4, you can use
1) Special dual-monitor graphic card (eg Appian)
2) two identical graphic cards with NT driver support for multiple monitors (eg Matrox)
