I agree, they should have waited but as you know IBM hasn't made any money in PCs of late and DELL and Gateway have been slumming along, making profits...with the help of the additional profit margin they get instead of the retailers. So I guess IBM wants to take the DELL, GTW approach. I don't know if you remember but DELL once sold through retail outlets...seems they got very profitable after they pulled out...
