Ref - <Am I missing something here. Don't you just get a "laplink" cable hook, it up to the two parallel ports, go into windows clic on direct cable connect, pour yourself a beer and wait about a half an hour to duplicate the whole disc on the new machine??>

Yes it works by blindly copying one disk to another including all hardware configuration info. So if your new computer has a different graphics adapter, the configuration info is now invalid. Any new software which came with the new computer may also be erased. The Windows Registery Information on the new machine has to be a `correct blend' of the Registery information from the old machine. A `blind and dumb' copy will definitely cause a malfunction.

I find laplink to be useful for copying when I am upgrading to new hard disk on the same computer, or else copying onto a similarly configured computer.

Duke, re: "Don't you just get a "laplink" cable hook, it up to the two parallel ports, go into windows clic on direct cable connect, pour yourself a beer"

I get the beer part. The AVERAGE person doesn't spend a lot of time searching out THE BEST PC solutions. We do what we know how to do, we want things to be easy and work.

It's one of the failures of the CONSUMER part of the PC industry, and probably the most important challenge to the category. Simplicity is an important selling point of all consumer products.
