-------OFF-TOPIC-------

I have a chipmunk problem, and I was thinking of getting out our old Hav-A-Hart trap. Do you happen to have any ideas on what to use for bait? Will the same sunflower seeds work?

Tom

I had a squirrel fall down my chimney. The Commander said the wood-stove was making 'funny' noises. When he looked inside, (It's pitch black in there!) all he could see was one shiny eye at the back. We left the stove door open and finally the squirrel came out into the cellar. This squirrel had a notch out of his/her ear and was covered in soot. I opened the door and The Commander caught our guest and set him/her on the grass outside. We named our squirrel Soot, and could easily identify him/her all winter because of the notched ear. If he'd turned him/her over and looked, I wouldn't need to use the cumbersome 'him/her' in my post.

Our squirrels have never caused any damage to our property, so I wouldn't want to see them come to any harm. We're home to four usually, never over five, and rarely as few as three. Black ones outnumbered grey ones for the last few years. Every spring, we see a new batch of little ones. For a few days, first from the nest, they don't seem afraid of humans and will walk up to us and sniff our feet. (I doubt they'd sniff The Commander's feet twice!)

Since our road was paved, traffic moves faster than wildlife and we get a number of road-kills. I guess this keeps their population in check. As you've posted, these animals sure like Sunflower seeds. I've a running challenge keeping the bird feeder for the birds. I'm amazed at the agility and creativity of squirrels when it comes to raiding the bird's food.

Cheers, PW.
