Heterogeneous and Homogeneous networks - a couple of angles.

Even though there seems to be some advantage to some customers to operate a homogeneous network supplied by one firm (one-stop-shopping), there are other customers (SBC for one) who appear to prefer running an auction between suppliers.

The auction environment

If a carrier would pick one supplier for a big contract, they are giving intangible worth to that supplier. By keeping several suppliers on the leash so-to-speak, they are not giving anything away. For each press release, the carrier can get its pound of flesh.

An equipment auction environment could save (SBC) some equipment dollars in the short run, but I wonder about the operating expenses.

The other angle - technology:

By picking the most technologically advanced supplier for each spurt of network growth, (SBC) would get an early benefit offered by new silicon. An expensive game plan, but perhaps it can pay off in earlier services to their customers.
