Rudedog-- <" - "Get CPQ"."> is just the Mikey we saw on TV doing the cerial ads... a little boy on a winning streak that cannot see any end. God bless him as he will surely take over the box world,, for as long as it may last,,, profits or not... that is all he has,, plus tons of $$$ of course. There is zero "business benefit" but is compelling to his self-image and ego...

rudedog: My published post was a much shorter version of my original draft. My original theme was the same as yours, without the historical details of the industry.

Unless Michael Dell is acting compulsively (and I think he may be) then he is acting for a reason with malice aforethought. It could be, as you suggested, that he may be trying to motivate his employers (and possibly his clients) by defining COMPAQ as a defeated dragon bleeding to death - but it may also be a device to distract attention from his own troubles. If he is not making sufficiently fast headway in services, storage and high-end - or even in consumer PC's - it would be in his interest to define success and failure in terms of rate of growth and market share in sales of commercial PC's.

There may be an underlying message designed to reinforce DELL's current advertising campaign. If COMPAQ has not succeeded in using the internet to sell commercial PC's as well as DELL then why should large enterprises turn to COMPAQ rather than to DELL for high end solutions and consulting services.

I do not know if what you are saying is true or not re:
DELL not being able to ship 8-way servers. In any case,
it does not matter because I'm sure that the "motherboard"
problem can be fixed.

I am sure that there will be many more 8-way server sold than 64/128 processor SMPs. So while you scoff at DELL's entry into the high end enterprise sector, DELL is moving inexorably up the food chain.

By the way I did not say that DELL was eating SUNWs lunch.
SUNW has big servers that DELL does not yet make. However,
DELL is definitely pressuring SUNW with its NT workstations and low and mid range servers.

DELL's "warmed over rehash of JIT" is pressuring CPQ severely but it does look like most of the wounds are self inflicted.

As to poor grounding in the industry, a lot can be said for breaking with the past when your company- CPQ- is only marginably profitable do its historical process.
