"Grand larceny" or "grand theft" is a crime and must be prosecuted by the state or "the people". The civil side is usually a tort, or personal wrong. "Civil conversion" would be an example, i.e. converting the funds of another to yourself. Civil cases are brought by individuals. It is very helpful in a civil case to have a criminal conviction or an administrative or regulatory adverse ruling to bolster the civil complaint. Sort of like the OJ Simpson trial, except in that case there was no criminal conviction, but the civil jury still found for the plaintiffs. Had there been a criminal conviction in the OJ Simpson trial, the civil case would have been much easier, IMO.
