rudedog: thanks for the clarification. The COMPAQ presentation gave me the impression that it was a more radical departure from the traditional clunky PC box than you have explained. Indeed, several articles have commented that it is an updated version of previous attempts by various companies to produce a "web box". The emphasis is on how it offers a simplified way of accessing the internet. I realise now that given its power and memory and compatibility with Windows 2000 it could carry out most computing functions, but I suppose my impression was that to do this it would need to plug in accessories.

If the DELL web-thingy is also aimed at the consumer market, will COMPAQ produce something similar specifically for consumers and is that likely to be "cooler" in design than the iPaq e.g. in colour, shape, texture, sound, internet content - more like the iMac?

rudedog. Re: "It is interesting to me that CPQ's new style is the opposite of Hype" I agree. This does seem a new focus. Also, it is better for CPQ NOT to make too big a deal about it. That would make DELL react faster. MC also said, I believe, that it would represent only 10%-15% of sales. That was calculated too, as part of a new policy of underpromise and overdeliver.

Re: "perhaps even going too far in that direction (as with the "no guidance" policy)." You could be right here, but it may be that the Board's direction to MC is "no more big surprises". I remember one of Rosen's comments when he was CEO that they need to make earnings more predictable. This seems to be a payoff on that promise.

rudedog: Can I have an addendum, too? If iPaq is configured for W2000 and not W9X how can COMPAQ ship in January if W2000 is not available until February (or later)? Does COMPAQ get advanced shipments of 2000 from MSFT?

When I listened to MC I got the impression that iPaq was not restricted to 2000, but had been designed to take advantage of 2000 when it became available as an upgrade. But I have probably got that wrong.
