Rose,

Thank you so much for the time you put into answer to Jim's question. I have been wanting to ask and didn't figure I would be able to understand and you were able to put a book on two pages. (I love it when someone can do that) I am just feeling comfortable with my calls and I will place this in my scrape book for later when I feel I am ready. Again thank you so very much and Jim/Willie thanks for asking.

Both of you are appreciated!

Thanks for the kind words, people. It was a good exercise to go through for me, too. One correction for the people who said they're "saving it for reference" - both places where I refer to "ITM amount" (in-the-money amount), I actually mean "OTM amount" (out-of-the-money amount). I still get those two things mixed up on puts, probably because the "good" direction I want them to go in is the opposite of a call's.

others can chime in here if they are sure they intimately know the vagaries of their brokerage's margin requirements for puts, and they're radically different than Fidos (in which case I'd love to open an account there).

Rose:

Nobody can explain it better than your post. The formula is generally followed by brokerage houses. Here is my experience:

TD Waterhouse : 25% (instead of 30% for Fido)
Brown & Co : 20%

Minimum requirements:

TD Waterhouse & Brown & Co : the greater of 10% of underlying stock plus premium vs $ 500/contract

No $ 10K kicker.

Networth minimum:

TD Waterhouse 100K
Brown 50K

Comission much lower at Brown than Waterhouse. Real time quotes on option are more reliable at Brown.

If I was a double Quillionaire living in a high-tax state I might want to consider writing LEAPS puts just to get LTCG treatment.

You might want to check with your CPA. All shorts (equity or option) are never considered LTCG regardless how long the time frame.

rose re: option margin requirements

contact "wall street access/bt alex brown" they are options specialist, don't play silly games like full service brokerages, excellent execution.....block trades go right to the floor trader..believe min 250k account or 400k net worth requirement. they offer no research, no recommendations, no nothing, just access to their traders. instinet access also.........clears through and statements from bt alex brown...moved my account from msdw a few months back...so far no problems...will rebate active traders dbc subscription rate..

thanks, Rosie, most excellent short put lecture

just what I needed, very stringent

forgot to mention in my last prose...

Japanese Candlesticks are now showing a clear "Harami" pattern with two consecutive updays within Tuesday's strong downday... the message is strong that a resumption is underway already

excuse my suspicions stated aloud... in the last month we have heard about Motorola and a supposed all-in-one multimode solution... we have heard about Cisco and a new highspeed wireless effort... we have heard about wannabees lusting for our wireless holy grail

personally, I would like to see some true linkage of wireless to the fiberoptic backbone, thereby creating a strong wireless superhighway... not my expertise, but believe it is needed to support the massive traffic coming in the next few years

good night, Gracie

"two month's gain of $70K"

aren't you being a bit premature here?
