I have been following this thread for a good while and have begun gathering together the parts for a computer that I will assemble in the next couple weeks. I have a couple questions I was hoping someone could answer.

There are numerous network cards at Buy.com. I though I would buy the Linksys 10/100 card. Is there another card that would be a better choice? I will be connecting two computers with a crossover cable.

My OS is Win98. From reading Microsoft's web site it appears that Win98 SE has advantages for networking. Their SE update CD ($20) had a four to six week delivery window. Is there a faster way to get it? I have downloaded all of the updates but don't believe they include the modem sharing, etc.

I am running two monitors on the box I have now with ATI Expert 98 PCI cards. It seems the most economical move would be to place one of those cards in the new box and match it with an Expert 98 AGP card, leaving one monitor on the old box. My guess is that cards from the same company will work together. Is anyone using this setup? The motherboard is an Aopen AX6BC.

Thanks in advance

Bob

Well, the un-needed new equipment is working great! UPS guy finally knocked loud enough for me to hear him on the third attempt. After about 100 reboots and an equal number of experimental configurations and a few calls to various tech-supports -- I am networked!

Got both computers to see each other and have 1 computer using the cable modem (other computer won't do it -- probably need sygate or whatever). Had to plug the cable from the modem into the up-link hole of the switch.

Installed TCP/IP and NetBUI on both computers. I take it that TCP/IP is for the cable and NetBUI is for the peer-to-peer stuff.

Seeing and transferring files between computers seems VERY FAST! Will have to do some time-trials.

RS: Thanks for the networking links.

Everybody have a good weekend -
wily
