And yet, I continue to hear the effect of the blues in so much rock--I don't mean zydeco or fusion, but the mainstream. Perhaps it is that my ears are so attuned to it. Maybe it is merely my current mood.

Seeking comment from Neo on musical types (although I'm not sure why I would address this to one who has placed David -Friggin'-Bowie among the 100 most influential people of the 20th century). Other comments most welcome. First, IMO, Rock 'n Roll is no longer a useful term. It seems to include all popular music that is not obviously "something else". I think it might be interesting to consider music by theme vs. "sound". Distinctive "sounds" often encompass similar themes, i.e., happy, sad, hope and discovery. Even sad tunes are often about something good or beautiful lost or out of reach. During the past couple of decades the most significant shift in "music", IMO, has been emergence of blatantly hostile, "***k you or them" themes. The potential influence of this "music" frankly troubles me. Disclaimer -- I am NOT voting for Pat Buchanan!
