Hi Jack, Thanks for your quite informative post. RE: "lucent has just announced the world's first high-capacity, all optical router -- moving ten times today's internet traffic." IP goes over fiber optical networks big time. The major IP backbones are fiber today. The growth of use of fiber is directly being driven by the needs of IP [not to be confused with my other post about FC.] Not being a routing expert, I assume the deployment of this particular optical router is into the backbone? Nothing needs to change with IP routing? RE: "45 billion in sales" That's a negative from an investment perspective. It's harder to grow 45B than it is to grow 12B. RE: "now lucent has come up with wavestar opticair...mount the devices on your building and send." How much does it cost? How easily deployable? How available? When? RE: "now the lightwaves in the router, and through the air inthe last mile to you." Consumer market- When? How much? Who deploys it? How easily deployable? How available? RE:"they got that last from lab to market in 18 months, and it'll be tested by globalcrossing next month. right now it's limited to 5 km" Hm... when is 10km expected? RE: "65 times more information that wireless" How could this relate/translate to wireless handhelds - or - wireless Internet devices? RE: "and that's just for openers." Not bad for an opening. Jack, re:"csco over lu on this one" Thank you for your informative post. LU is the tech powerhouse for sure. They invent great products to service the telcos. To answer your question though, My post was directed toward "the last mile" deployment of wideband. Your highlighted LU products are do service as high priced solutions suitable for data backbones. I suspect that LU will market this stuff to fewer than 30 accounts. In my previous post I'm suggesting that CSCO is more focused on customer service than on product and that this might be the more important strength in these segments. What do you think? Jeff
