it is clear that my thread leadership has become a divisive issue.

Uncle Frank, this is not true and this entire issue is ridiculous. There is a vocal minority in any crowd. Please continue doing what is best for the whole and ignore the couple individuals making irrational claims.

It's a time consuming, low paying job, and the psychic rewards have been unacceptable recently.

As difficult as it would be, the better choice is to hang in there and simply disregard posts and statements that are not founded in reality.

FWIW, I'm 39 and don't care when you were born-- or your race, creed, or sexual orientation. All I care about is keeping this gorilla game discussion alive, organized, and civil. And you, Uncle Frank, are needed for that!

Awaiting your prompt return. Rory

Frank,

Don't quit.

Your efforts to police your thread are what kept it from degenerating into bickering and flames, like other threads.

It is unreasonable for posters who are new to this thread to expect to instantly enjoy the same rapport as those who have been here a lot longer. The relationships we have here were not forged overnight. The women have made their point, everyone's consciousness has been raised. It is time to continue to discuss candidates for the G&K portfolios and at the same time to resume building the kind of inclusive relationships and rapport that, under your leadership, we have come to treasure.

Aloha, Mike

Frank,

<< I will continue to read every post on the thread and will contribute if I can add something of value >>

We will hold you to that.

<< but will not attempt to manage the thread ... It's a time consuming, low paying job >>

... but a leadership role that you excelled at. I owe you (I'm tempted to say WE, as most others feel the same, I'm sure, but they will speak for themselves.

Uncle Frank,

I have been lurking this thread since March, and this is my first post. I feel you should know that there are many like me who feel they don't have much to contribute at the moment, but enjoy reading the comments of such a knowledgeable group. As a result, I have bought over the course of this year QCOM, JDSU, GMST, NTAP, and WIND. No need to tell you I have profited greatly from this thread and I hope that you and all other contributors will remain part of our daily routine.

Thank you.

Marc Gilbert

Frank,

I apologize to Jill, Donna, and Poet for any grievances they might have against me, and invite them to re-join the thread and take leadership roles

That apology is appreciated, and it was all that was ever necessary, even by PM--not resignation from a thread that you have otherwise shepherded with great care. One might wonder why things matter so much in cyberspace, often with people we've never met, but the fact is, many of us are building our financial future and SI is the hub of information and connection that we use to do it, and often I find I can't discuss this stuff in depth with my friends. They might want a stock recommendation but they aren't spending what sometimes amounts to several hours a day reading through posts, doing research, exchanging information and setting trading/investing positions. So it does matter. People here become friends in a different and meaningful way.

I was impressed with Stan's post yesterday about gender wars in medicine. First of all, I was impressed that he took the time to ponder and discuss it. Second, his post showed the complexity of the situation in real life. This situation has also been complex. I won't go over it all again now.

I should say that teasing, (often with a <g> added to indicate tone), a bit of flirtation, back-slapping, OT sports discussion, or someone not responding to a specific post is all completely acceptable. What is not acceptable to me is singling out a woman, by PM or publicly, to chastise the content/form of a post when the guys have made similar posts, and they are not also singled out.

I also find something else unacceptable: all the women who PMed me in the last month, with some very strong words about sexism in this forum, but refused to post publicly, saying they didn't want to be flamed, or they didn't think they could change things. Mike Buckley is right: why give credence to comments by PM that remain private?

Frank, this is still a stellar thread--why don't we turn swords into stockshares and learn from what has transpired.

Jill

< It's a time consuming, low paying job, and the psychic rewards have been unacceptable recently.>

I lost some sleep last night, going over the events my comments generated. They really did stimulate quite a discussion, but if this is the outcome, it would be very sad. It may be that my commentary about pre-boomers was too inflammatory. They were made in the vein of generating a discussion about losing women on the thread, and because I was concerned that an excellent thread was displaying a groupthink mentality, and unwittingly narrowing it's focus - losing the forest for the trees.

I would like to publicly say that the thread you have nurtured along is an awesome accomplishment, in terms of the quality, and the homework done by many posters. In the wild west of cyberspace, the thread is going through an evolutionary process, which, although painful and sometimes divisive, is a healthy thing. I sincerely hope you will reconsider your decision. As for my part, I am going into low-profile non-lurking, non-posting mode. Yesterday's events were a lot for me take in, and I would like for the thread to take some time to reflect. I thank LindyBill for responding with such honesty as he rose to the occasion. I'm not anti-sexist and am not interested in playing a gender card, or being perceived as such. I hope the heated emotions will subside.

Respectfully,
Donna

from briefing.com

Uncle Frank,
may i suggest...take a well deserved break. you have helped a helluva lot of folks. some realize it and are grateful. others know it but are giving priority to other non-stock and non-stock market issues.

may i venture that you have gained from the thread as well.

you have a lot of friends here.

you have an ability that could help a lot of folks.

Uncle Frank: In a different context, at your request for suggestions, I suggested "don't". I repeat that now.

Since from time to time I have kicked at the GG traces and you brought me back to concentrate on the main focus here, I feel that I am in a strong position to point out that your leadership here is precious - in every sense of that term.

If you feel the need of a rest, fine, but please keep that short.

We need your leadership for the good of the thread.

Uncle Frank,

Shortly after I joined SI...I made the remark that this is
the very best and most civilized thread on SI. Most of the
credit goes to you for your outstanding leadership role.
I have not once regretted that statement, nor in anyway ever
had a doubt. Matter of fact, I wholeheartly disagree with
all this sexist BS. Please reconsider and stay for the good
that you do benefits us all greatly.

Your friend,

Glenda
