Goutama, re:<on-again, off-again Gateway Athlon> There's also rumors that Ted Waitte wants to retire and the CFO wants to resign.

Goutama,
Thanks for the post.

The only quote from the article is

"We don't have Athlon in our current mix,"

No Sh*t! I still look for them to be announced on December 13 with availability on December 29th. AMD does not need (or perhaps want) GTW now, but AMD desperately needs them for sales in Q1. If we do not get GTW or HWP, I do not see how we could surpass 1.5 Million Athlon in Q1.

Re:"A spokesman for PC OEM Gateway 2000 refuted reports that it plans to ship a system musing Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon microprocessor.

Goutama,

Gateway can refute reports of Athlon systems all they want. This rumor has legs of it's own and is fact starting to take on the look of an "urban legend"-you know like alligators in the NYC sewer system.

I'm not looking at this through rose colored glasses, but just where did Gateway come up with an Athlon system for Family PC if they had no intention of selling them.

One possibility. What if it was a trial balloon to judge the reaction of Intel.Maybe Intel reacted very badly, thus the press release to sooth the already frayed nerves at chipzilla.

Goutama,

<Gateway news - not good, .....>

<"We don't have Athlon in our current mix," the spokesman said.

He declined to comment on when and if that position might change.>

There is overwhelming amount of data out there to suggest Gateway should introduce Athlon systems soon. Typically I would say this Hachman story is non-news - companies routinely do not comment about unannounced products or platforms. But in the context of AMD and Gateway relationship let's take this as red flag.

Hi Goutama:

If a kernel of truth inthis the latest chapter of the GTW?Athlom soap opera, all I can say is it's GTW's loss. Once bitten twice shy! GTW didn't learn in Oct. and perhaps they haven'y learned in Dec. If any substance to this one, which I doubt, GTW'll probably learn the hard way sometime ou ti Y2000 when the currently queued Athlon orders can be filled!
