It is fascinating, although rather speculative. Part of the problem, though, is that there is no definitive evidence about when Mary died, and tradition has it that she lived to a ripe old age, practically a maiden, before her assumption. Even without the miraculous elements, it would have been possible for her to have been interviewed, albeit quite awhile before the final composition of the gospel. I suppose it is not terribly likely, but it is all shrouded and sketchy....I had never heard about Lafitte and Bowie, by the way. How did they get together?......

CB, this is getting into religion, which is traditionally at least as bad a thing to "debate" as politics. There has been a lot of scholarship on the historical Jesus lately, and it's interesting to read. My understanding from the few articles I've read is that, as you say, a lot of the messianic interpretation of Jesus was grafted on later, and it's not even clear if Jesus considered himself God, at least in the very literal sense that much Christian doctrine follows.

But that interpretation is, uh, sort of treading on heretical territory, and in the spirit of Christmas, let's just say it's a matter of faith.

Cheers, Dan.
