Paul Re <<any appropriate SSE optimizations in the Intel Compiler will also be of benefit to the AthWIPE.>>

That's what I thought you might be saying. Thanks.

Re: "Thus, any appropriate SSE optimizations in the Intel Compiler will also be of benefit to the AthWIPE."

I think our AMD friends are going to counter by pointing out that Intel used version 4.5 of their compiler while AMD used 4.0 which may not have SSE optimizations. That argument may hold water for FP operations but probably won't be a decisive factor for Integer because the only available SPECint scores where both processors use the same compiler still show the CuMine winning but by a narrower margin.

You do read German don't you?

<Mani - Re: "I do not get the significance"

Just pointing this out.

Remember - AMD's AthWIPER contains much of the reverse-engineered Intel SSE instructions.

Thus, any appropriate SSE optimizations in the Intel Compiler will also be of benefit to the AthWIPE.>

If my memory serves me right the 4.0 version does not have SSE support. Also, I do not think SSE is fully supported on Athlon currently so any SSE optimized versions may not be of much use for AMD (at least for now).

I think AMD uses Intel's compiler because it is the best openly available compiler for SPEC. May be someone who keeps on top of this kind of stuff can clarify.

Paul, Merry Christmas.

News: Intel Hits the Gas
On Monday Intel released the 800-MHz Pentium III processor
ahead of its original schedule, and apparently that's just
the tip of the iceberg. The Santa Clara, Calif., manufacturer
has advanced its "road map" for 2000, and will come out with
850-MHz and 866-MHz Pentium IIIs in the year's first quarter,
according to a presentation obtained by the HardOCP hardware
discussion site.
