But Los Angeles is very diverse in terms of housing values- if you want a DECENT house you will have to pay for it. You can certainly get cheap housing in LA- but I wouldn't want to live in one.

There is one simple answer to the school problem, especially in Washington, D.C.

A simple law that requires every public servant (including members of Congress and their staffs) to send their child to public school, and if they work in Washington, D.C., requiring them to send their children to a school in Washington, D.C. and making it a criminal offense to treat the child of a public servant any differently than any other student. I will guarantee you that the schools would be dramatically improved within a year.

Imagine if Chelsea Clinton had had to go to public school in downtown D.C.

Sort of like my idea for simplifying taxes -- require every member of Congress and every other person who works for the federal government; AND every person who works for any elected federal official in any capacity (including part of campaign fundraising or campaign staffs) AND every registered lobbyist and their staffs to prepare their own income taxes without resource to any computer software, any accountants or lawyers or other professionals, any tax books, or other other non-government resources, using ONLY the tax code, the federal tax regulations, and the IRS forms. They may call in on the 1-800 tax info number but may NOT identify themselves as being anything other than a normal taxpayer.

We would have a vastly different tax code within two years. I guarantee it.
