The case of the cuckold is a special case- most stepfathers KNOW they are stepfathers. I do not believe the danger is as great (or may not be there at all) if the male is ignorant. I believe the POTENTIAL exists in any non-related male entering a family where there are earlier born children to another male. It is ONLY potential - but should be relevant in how decisions are made regarding childcare and supervision. And EVERYONE should be educated about this biological aspect of behavior.

I believe the instinct is triggered by pheromones, which are secreted in sweat and oil glands. It is well-established that man, as well as animals, can differentiate between others who are genetically related and those who are not on the basis of smell. The research is quite sophisticated, and I'd be happy to go into detail if you are not familiar with it. It's not something we are conscious of as a matter of course, but the effects can be quite powerful.
