TULSA, Okla., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Williams Communications WCG has signed a multi-year agreement with Loral Skynet for fully protected usage of dedicated Ku-band transponders on Telstar 7. The capacity will support distribution of media-rich content to the edge of the Internet utilizing Williams Communications' Vyvx(R) teleport and satellite systems. Financial terms were not disclosed.
"Combining Vyvx satellite and teleport technology with Williams' network capabilities provides Internet content providers the opportunity to augment terrestrial delivery systems with a satellite delivery system for bandwidth- intensive content. Satellite delivery infrastructures provide the capability to bypass bottlenecks common to terrestrial networks while supporting multi- cast distribution of content," said Wes Hanemayer, vice president of Vyvx teleport and satellite systems.

"This hybrid solution will drive the future delivery of digital content," Hanemayer continued. "Additionally, having Vyvx teleports connected via Williams' nationwide fiber-optic network allows us to offer both geographically diverse and redundant satellite delivery solutions to the Internet community."

"Our agreement with Williams Communications for Vyvx services further establishes Telstar 7 as an important Internet neighborhood for North America," said Terry Hart, president of Loral Skynet. "We are pleased to be a part of Vyvx's innovative approach to providing for customers' future needs."

Telstar 7 covers the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico as well as parts of the Caribbean and Latin America from its orbital slot at 129 degrees West. The satellite carries a total of 48 transponders -- 24 at C-band and 24 at Ku-band -- and provides 3400 rf watts of on-board transmitter power.

Vyvx solutions meet customers' multi-media transmission needs through integrated fiber-optic, satellite and teleport services. A service of Williams Communications based in Tulsa, Okla., Vyvx operations span the United States, with offices in Miami and Singapore to serve markets in Latin America and Asia. Vyvx transmission paths include fiber, satellite space segment, fixed and transportable earth stations to enable worldwide distribution of broadcast news, sports, advertising and special events. The Vyvx transponder inventory is linked to the Williams Multi-Service Broadband Network(TM) through its four U.S. earth stations.
