SS is not welfare. Those receiving benefits worked for a living and contributed to the system for years. OTOH, real welfare recipients contribute nothing to the system.

Lizzie -- why in the world do keep assuming my financial status, tax liability, etc? You have no idea. And, don't bother asking.

Next, if I have been giving the government money for almost 40 years and they have been telling me that I would start getting some back at a specific age -- do you think the government is "pandering" to me if they do what they said they'd do?

Lizzie, I DO think a vast amount of SS is a welfare system. Regardless whether we ever agree on what part is "welfare", why not merge the system with income tax, so people will know what their bill is when they vote.

If a union or corporate pension system operated like SS, all the people running it would be behind bars. And, BTW, what do you think would happen if, say, the UAW, withheld pension benefits from retired members who were well-off?

If you ever tire of trying to deny me a shot at the dole, tell me more about your A&C visit to Africa. How long -- where did you go/stay or whatever you liked or didn't like about the trip.

My Baby would be ready to go back inside a minute. To say I had a slight interest would be wild exaggeration.

Carry on -

Mike

"I can certainly see why YOU would want to move away from calling a SS a welfare system (for the wealthy), because that would be beneficial for you."

Sounds like an assumption to me.

Means testing should be applied to SS but not in the conventional sense. Detailed records should be kept of every penny - who paid what in and when. Compound interest should be computed using formulae for inflation. Honest formulae - ones that include the price of a 30000 mile checkup or a week in intensive care. The IRS requires it of us; let's require it of the SS administrators.
Then each individual account will have a real balance that can then be arranged for annuity style disbursement. Those who didn't pay much in would get little out.
