Rude, If MD and Waitt could get along.....what do think of a merger??

* Gateway could be Dell's low/middle end consumer brand....Dell would be the high-end consumer, corporate brand...making clear dilineation in the consumer's mind (which is, currently, not the case)

* Perfect up-sell (consumer) sales cycle...Gateway to Dell...life-long customer...

* Dell could benefit from/expand AOL Time Warner relationship (of Gateway's)

* Defensive...eliminates one possible direct competitor...who, one day, may eat into corporate biz...certainly a barrier to expanded consumer sales....

* "Out-of-box" ops..Gateway has shown more cunning, quicker-to-the-mark..in understanding this ops..this trend...possibly...one big growth op is leveraging current (consumer) customer relationship to sell a lot of other stuff...financing, too...

* Increased leverage in supplier relationships....due to bigger purchases...more cost savings...

* Potential cost savings due to administrative personnel cuts (higher sales per employee, combined Dell/Gateway, then as separate entities)....

Although I'd like to see Dell consider "bets" in handhelds, storage, and other e-commerce....If Dell would do a bigger purchase, GTW would seem on the screen (again, probably fantasy, but assuming Waitt and Dell would get along)....

DELL and Intel could bring out a legacy-free box any time
What would they run on it? Windows95 or 98 will not run on a legacy free system (It needs the boot sequence). Have to wait for Windows 2000 before legacy free is feasable.
TP

rudedog. you're somewhat of a UNIX specialist. why wouldn't Dell be interested in what this small company is doing (MIGR - they claim to currently partner with SUNW - their website is migratech.com)? We've got some people down south that are claiming this migration technology is being reviewed by Intel and should be caputred by Dell as well to compete against SUNW. What is your take; can this also be viewed as part of the SUNW mistique? The migration from 32 to 64bit is healthy; but this company? Aren't you down south? All of a sudden the volume picks up in this dinky thing and their all talking Dell and Intel. I don't see why Dell can't handle the process themselves, other than Migratech's claim of lower migration costs.

Corporate Profile

MigraTEC specializes in migration and year 2000 services and has developed leading-edge technology for platform migrations. MigraTEC is located in Dallas, Texas and has 35 employees and contractors who develop, support and utilize in-house developed technology. MigraTEC has been in business since 1991 and has performed over 350 migrations.

Market Need
As faster, more cost-effective hardware and software is developed, those firms that wish to utilize the new technologies are required to upgrade their existing software applications. This is typically a very time consuming, tedious and complex task. MigraTEC's technologies - MigraTEC Migration Workbench and MigraTEC2000 - automate much of the work required to move applications to take advantage of technology. In many instances, MigraTEC's products and services have saved 75% of the time and cost of doing the job using in-house staff.

Target Markets
MigraTEC is targeting its technology to support three large market opportunities:

Year 2000 ? Client / Server

Server Consolidation

Application Maintenance

Year 2000 Client / Server Opportunity
As the Year 2000 is fast approaching, companies are in the final processes of cleaning up their mainframe applications. However, most companies still have done little or nothing with their client / server applications. MigraTEC has developed technology that is focused on analyzing and remediating client / server source code in order to ascertain Year 2000 compliance or to make applications Year 2000 compliant. This market space is expected to continue through 2000 according to one of MigraTEC?s partners. As of November 1998, MigraTEC?s tool was bid on 180,000,000 lines of C and C++ code. The Year 2000 market for client / server is estimated at $90 billion. (15% of Gartner Group?s $600 billion total market prediction.)

Server Consolidation
IBM has recently quantified the server consolidation market as a $65 billion dollar opportunity. Server consolidation occurs when companies who have bought many different brands and versions of client / server technology seek to reduce total cost of ownership by reducing the number of platforms and leverage new advancements in technology. MigraTEC has been made aware of some companies that support over 60 different versions of UNIX. About one third of IBM?s market estimate is earmarked for supporting technologies. MigraTEC, through several of its partners such as Sun Microsystems, has targeted this market space because of the years of experience performing application migrations and the architecture of our technology can be re-manifested to create and support these new markets.

MigraTEC is currently under contract to provide upgrade services on behalf of Sun Microsystems.

Application Maintenance
Firms that have secured outsourcing contracts are looking for ways to improve services and reduce costs. MigraTEC has developed technology to enable application maintenance staff to understand the impact of changes and identify efficient ways to make those changes. One of MigraTEC's partners spends $15b in application maintenance and it is thought that MigraTEC Migration Workbench will be able to reduce their expenses by as much as 10%-25%.

Distribution Model
MigraTEC markets its products and services primarily through strategic partners. These partners either resell MigraTEC?s services or utilize MigraTEC technology in their operations. MigraTEC has a number of partners including: EDS, Sun Microsystems, Computer Horizons, Keane, Ciriz and Reasoning.

Strategy
MigraTEC?s strategy is to:

Leverage core competencies by re-manifesting its core technology

Use strategic partnerships to customize MigraTEC ?s Workbench to develop new markets

The core migration technology has already been re-manifested into the MigraTEC2000 workbench that has become one of the premier tools in its market. MigraTEC Migration Workbench is being customized to support 32 to 64-bit conversions thus enabling UNIX users to leverage new advancements in UNIX technology. Because of the open architecture of the MigraTEC Migration Workbench, new migration targets can be ready in 30 to 90 days.

MigraTEC solicits market information from its partners in order to ensure that MigraTEC?s offerings have established markets. One instance of this model is the relationship with Sun Microsystems where MigraTEC provides migration technology to support Sun Microsystems new 64 bit technology.
