Interesting caption on one of the pix: Inside Phelps Gate. Plaque on wall is police substation. The inside gate is locked at 11pm and requires a Yale ID to open. 11 p.m.? Is that true of all the gates? Then she wouldn't have needed her Yale ID at 9:15, and neither would anyone else. From the Vanity Fair article: "The woman who had seen Jovin walking on College Street at around 9:25 on the night of the stabbing saw Van de Velde on television and started shaking." Xeyes's story becomes ever more ridiculous. I somehow think her dropping the books off in the lobby meant she didn't plan to be home for some time. As I've said, I need to investigate this further. As noted, I think it quite likely that the friend was out on a date. If Suzanne were truly tired and looking to sleep, or truly was going to stay home and do work, she most likely would have retraced her steps to go home. Which is precisely what I believe she did. Forget Xeyes. She was making it all up.

Maybe the reason that Suzanne didn't return through the yard was that there was someone there that she was trying to avoid/evade? For example she may have felt that she was being followed, and yet not felt strongly enough to have mentioned it to either Peter or the police. She might have just decided to walk back on the street, under the street lights. THe yard looked unlighted/poorly lit in your pictures. When you talked with Peter did he mention Suzanne looking at all agitated or nervous, or did he noticed someone hanging around? As for my previous stalker rendezvous, I was attempting to breathe life into one of your scenarios that you had dismissed as unlikely. We could equally dismiss almost any car scenario as being unlikely due to requiring a driver and a back seat stabber. Two people are much less likely to have kept this secret than one. <edit> I have one more question about Peter Stein: Just where does he live in relation to Phelps Gate? Within a 5-15 minute walk? He doesn't have all that long to get on the phone...
