RE: My DSL service w/BellSouth using Alcatel DSLAM

Well, here it is, another week has past, and I am still not operational. You may recall from my previous posts we are now in the second week of trying to get a residential DSL service from BellSouth operational for me.

While everything has been squared away on my PC side for days (DSL software for Win98 correctly setup after several problems w/wrong config CD, etc.), the Atlanta Alcatel DSLAMs are still DOWN. This has been ongoing for 11 days now.

BellSouth has a few thousand residential DSL customers in Atlanta, and almost none of us can access since about Jan. 7th. Tech support keeps telling me it is a central office problem with no known timeframe to repair, and not a problem on my side. I did call the BellSouth Executive office, and complained to the VP in charge of FastAccess (BellSouth's brand name for DSL) about terrible phone system for support (you get queued to a wrong number) etc. Doesn't 11 days down sound like a long time to you? Does to me. I don't think it implies that Alcatel's DSLAM are bad, but something does appear fundamentally wrong in how it has been brought up in Atlanta. We are all learning, and I am still optimistic.

Still using my 56K dial.

Hi Mike, appreciate the links and your input. I really like ALA and expect a great year...looking forward to a sneak preview Feb 03.

Mike, a couple questions for you if you have the time...

Are you the Mike that used to post on the old ALA SI thread?

Do you have any opinion on the logistics of ALA buying CS or NN? We know NN is on the blocks, but I question if CS would rush to sell if in fact a turnaround is in the works.

Any opinions on Marconi? I've had a slow start trying to research this as I don't find much information. Sure sounds like it might be a stock to own also.

Thanks again and look forward to your continued input.

Re: Alcatel's Position in the DWDM Market

Steve and Thread- ALA gets more interesting all the time. I didn't realize they have a number four position in the DWDM space. Combine this with their leading position in DSL, their leading position in Digital Cross Connects, their apparent positioning to dominate the LMDS space, and it appears ALA may turn out to be a bargain in the communications infrastructure equipment space. My concern is they are based in France AND wonder why no mention of SBC Project Pronto in the Q4 press release? -MikeM(From Florida)

DWDM-Long Haul Terrestrial Market Grew 21% in 3Q99

According to Dell'Oro Group; Lucent and Nortel Continue to Dominate the DWDM Market

PORTOLA VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 2000--The DWDM-Long Haul Terrestrial Market Grew 21% ($981 M) in 3Q99 with Lucent and Nortel taking the lead according to a Dell'Oro Group Report published earlier this month. Lucent continued to have success with the WaveStar 40G holding 41% market share. Nortel took a close second with the S/DMS Transport Node holding 33% of the market.

The DWDM Long Haul Terrestrial Market, through 3Q99 has been largely comprised of OC-48 capacity multiplexers with 80% of the wavelength shipments being OC-48. However, the high user demand for OC-192 is bolstering OC-192 wavelength growth to twice the rate of OC-48.

Until 3Q99, Nortel was the only manufacturer with widespread availability of OC-192 DWDM. During 4Q99 additional manufacturers began selling their OC-192 DWDM products (e.g. Lucent's 400G, Alcatel's 1640 DADM), and we expect OC-192 growth to accelerate during 2000.

Market Leaders DWDM-Long Haul Terrestrial and Q3 Quarterly Growth

1. Lucent +20%
2. Nortel +34%
3. Ciena +10%
4. Alcatel +5%
5. Pirelli +18%
