I was having the same problem as you and found out that the culprit was my virus detection program. (Inocutel T) I disabled it and Word starts up as advertised. If the problem returns, you might give this a shot.

mr.mark, i'm never faster than anyone, BUT, i can start MSword in 2/3 seconds from Start/Programs/MSWord. Have RealPlayer7, Inocutel1, aol little yellow guy in sys.tray. Don't have Desktop Icon MSWord.

What gives,?

I agree about upgrades,the rule of thumb I use now is is that if the program is working well then I disregard upgrades.Thats why I uninstalled IE 5.01 and reinstalled plain old 5.0.
