Kash Re <<Dell won't go with Athlon, period IMHO.>>

I also do not expect Dell to go with Athlon within the next few months. But they might after that, who knows. If Thunderbird outperforms the Coppermine by a nice margin and Intel has nothing to offer till Willamet, I doubt Dell is willing to be significantly behind its competitors for 6 months or so. That is a very long time in this business. Dresden should start producing volumes at that time.

I am surprised you make such a statement without any disclaimer with regard to the time line. :)

Dell's statement yesterday on alternative CPU vendor is HIGHLY hedged, notice "at this point of time"

Also catched Tom Meredith this morning on CNBC in responding to Liz C's question whether Dell would consider AMD, his remarks can be summarized as "we always evaluate alternative CPU and will continue doing so" There is NO clear cut death sentence for AMD, yet.

My sense is that Dell WILL use AMD, most likely 2H this year.

In the end, true capitalist win, which does favor the odd of Dell's defection to AMD.

Hi kash:

Beg to differ...Dell will have no choice but to go with Athlons at some point in Y2000. Dell cannot afford to be uncompetitive in the top end for any extended period. My assumption in making this statement is that Intel will not be competitive in the top end in Y2000 despite all their promises to Dell of a "some-time-in-the-future" competitive PWeeIII top ender!

With Athlons now making inroads into the government sector, major business will not be long in following suit. Dell eventually will be caught up in the Athlon's slipstream!
