Russky oil depletion - oops

russiatoday.com

My bet, is that if this is what Putin is willing to admit to in public the real depletion situation is probably far worse.

Thanks for the link to the website, but it looks like they have problems:

ABOUT "MID-EAST REALITIES"
middleeast.org

Because of financial and political pressures MER has been suspended. The MER website with articles
and updates from 1996 to mid-1999 continues to be available including search capability. Clips of a few
MER-TV programs and a number of network TV appearances will continue to be available to watch on
the Internet as long as we continue to maintain our website. It is possible however that everything relating
to MER may have to be discontinued if minimal financial support is not available.

Many of the past MER-TV programs are still available for order.

That article is long on polemic and short on facts. I entirely agree that Gulf State oil has not benefitted a large section of the "Arabic" (not to be confused with Muslim) population. And it its absolutely true that many Western finacial institutions have benefitted mightily by Gulf states money being funnelled into their coffers. But George, if the Gulf states were but a colony of the US why isn't XOM, CHV, TX, P, etc pumping ME crude furiously right now? Could it be that they have no oil wells there? If the West is "raping" the Gulf States of their funds then it could also be argued that the higher the prices the better.

If the "US gets what the US wants" and as you suggest and the US want 20-21 dollars a barrel, how come oil trades at over $28 today? The US certainly did not control OPEC during the embargo. The only thing that really broke the OPEC embargo was a hellacious recession in the US. That is an odd sort control is it not? Why is Kuwait now the biggest oil HAWK on the planet? If they are puppets doing US bidding then one could only conclude the US wants the prices right where they are, maybe higher. I believe Kuwaiti compliance with cuts is among the highest in OPEC. I believe they learned a very valuable lesson about being a US puppet and keeping prices artificially low. THEY ALMOST LOST THEIR COUNTRY DOING US BIDDING. Hmmmmmmm. Kuwait has backed their public pronouncements with real production cuts. Hardly the stuff of puppitry.

Am I saying that the US has no control? Of course not, but George think about what a destabilised Kuwait and Saudi Arabia means to US ME policy. The US has many interests in the Gulf besides the price of oil. I think the US policy over there would be better characterized as interests , rahter than control. IMO What is really being decided here, is how high can oil prices can go without inducing recession in consuming nations. Since the US currency has been bebased over the years, and crude prices are expressed in that currency, my bet is that the floor prices are in the mid twenties. I wonder who will win - The Pentagon, or Bill Richardsons political aspirations? One final thing, the US tried to "control" a middle eastern country once before with disastrous results. Two words - AYATOLLAH KHOMEINI.

IMO the situation in the Middle East is far more complex than that "workers of the Arab world, unite" article suggests.
