Re: "Sounds like he is trying to slam Gateway, HP, Compaq, IBM, and the other Athlon distributers."

Amazing comments from Dell.

"AMD is preparing a response to Dell's comments."

I wonder if the response that AMD is preparing will be a libel suit?

Kevin

Steve, Maroon is right. Michael Dell has built a large company...now he wants to build a small
company from it.
AMD processors are well know to have fewer errata and incompatibilities than
Intel processors. There are no incompatibility issues of which he speaks,
there are no fragility issues.
He is just taking a King's position with no logical basis when he is in the UK.
Others are biting at his heels in the direct model. How will he fare when he
is one of many in a pack and not the leader?

Of course he has never had any problems with delivery, and incompatibility or fragility with Intel's parts....not a one....not a million....many million.

Bill

Hi steve:

Comment (1): Michael Dell's comments have all the earmarks of a wounded snake!

Comment (2): Sounds like he's trying to defend the last yard, even though the game is already out of reach!

Steve,

Re:"michael dells comments"

I think his comments have VALIDITY.

AMD does not provide a complete solution yet.

They need to stand behind their chips sets and assure DRIVERS as well.

As well as ensuring GOOD QUALITY MB's are available.

Remember all teh crappy reviews of AThlon MB's.

Unfortunately AMDs management just doesn't get IT.

regards,

Kash

<In an interview held in London, Dell told ZDNet UK News that although AMD was making good progress with its processor range, the technology it offered "was too fragile" for Dell customers. Asked if by 'too fragile' he meant there were incompatibility issues with AMD architecture Dell said, "Yes, and that's vital."

Describing some of his customers as being at the "lunatic fringe" of computer use -- those users who are happy to remove and replace peripherals such as sound or video cards -- Dell said: "We found the AMD environment to be much more fragile... than equivalent Intel systems." He went on, "These are system issues that underlie the integrity of our own brand." >

Interesting! Tells me that Dell is either out-of-touch or is being fed crap. Nonetheless, if I were a AMD sales guy I would see this as an opportunity. This guy has a well defined objection. In sales the philosophy is" "keep taking away the customers objections until he has no more - then you have a sale". May be someone like Cory G can post eloquently on that topic.
