mr. mark

IE 5.0 has been very stable for me. I always have 5-8 windows open and I can count the crashes in the past 3 months on one hand.

mr. mark,

I've gone through almost exactly the same thing. I really wanted to keep using Netscape but the crashes got to be too much. IE5 has turned out to be much more stable, although not perfect. I still use Netscape Messenger for email because I don't want to deal with the hazards of Javascript/Active-X viruses in Outlook.

Amateur opinion but I find ie5 stable enough. I get a crash about once every two weeks and keep multiple windows open with plenty of java running as well as a tv card going. I personally didn't like outlook (too clunky) but am happy with outlook express. I had problems with netscape so uninstalled it. If you need a bookmark converter, here's a recommended one.

i don't look forward to reorganizing all my bookmarks. they're all there in ie now as imports,

mr.mark, I was fiddling around with Explore/Favorites/Imported bookmarks and found all my 682 Netscape Bookmarks were in alphabetically order with the IE logo. Looks like they were merged with a few Favorites from IE. I did not do this. It just Happened. Can I suspect Billy? Anyway seems OK, also a good path to the Sorted Bookmarks.

I don't use IE only when I click on Banner in Quote Tracker it pops open in IE. No Biggie.OH! in File the Imported Bookmarks is Checked. I didn't do this either!

netpathway.com, bunch of tips/tricks.

My good friend we went though all this last year.. Switch to IE 5.01.<ggg>

I had nothing but problems with Netscape. It would lockup once or twice a day.. I switched IE and I don't think it's crashed more than a couple times in the past year. And crash is to severe a term. I just get the window that says "This program has performed an illegal operation." Then I shut the browser, restart and go.

I'm not a fan of either Outlook (which I use at work) or IE (which I only use for Active-X reasons -- ie, never).

Hi Mark,

I'm a bit saddened to hear that you are contemplating switching over to IE. As you know, I've run Netscape since it first came out, and have been a big fan of it ever since.

I can say with a fair amount of certainty, that the platform you are running it on, or the association of Netscape and other apps in your environment is to blame for the excessive 'crashing' of Netscape in your machine.

I've been using ver 4.7, and 4.72 on either Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 for the last six months or so with almost no problems. Even one of my Windows 98 boxes uses Netscape without problems. (You might want to consider upgrading to Windows 2000 Professional... I'm a big fan)

The only times I do run into problems is either from poor Javascript on some sites, or TCP/IP stack problems with my IC.

Anyway, I must admit that Internet Explorer 5.01 has some very cool features that practically forcing me to use it on a more regular basis. Although I'll always prefer the Netscape interface over IE, the features being incorporated in IE now are superior IMO.

As far as Outlook is concerned, if basis e-mailing is all you'll be doing, stick with Outlook Express (it's also handy as a Usenet News reader). For extra networking, task, and calendar features, go with Outlook 2000.

Good luck with whatever you choose,

Rich

mark: They all crash.
Best defense is to keep your system as clean as possible and don't have a lot of extra garbage that you don't need on. Use the uninstall in Control panel->add/remove programs when getting rid of things. Scan disk/Defrag will help to an extent, but once they really start running bad, slow, crashy, locking-up constantly, the only thing that will bring 'em back is to Backup, Fdisk, Format, re-install the OS and all the programs. I use mine heavily as most folks on here do, and I "re-do" my system every 4-5 months.
Got tired of trying to fix things that couldn't be fixed.
