Paul,

Then, literally at the last minute, Joe Montana throws a touchdown pass - and the Good Guys win !

I didn't know that he had ever played for the Broncos!

Then, literally at the last minute, Intel gives in to Bill Gates' extortion, in order to avoid a second embarassing loss to AMD in one week.

Paul, now you have me pissed off. As a San Franciscan and AMD shareholder, don't ever link Intel with Joe Montana and 49ers. If you want to use football analogies, the 49ers is much more like AMD than Intel. The 49ers had losing seasons for years and no one respected them, then Montana and others arrived and they quickly became a championship team. Kinda reminds one of what the Athlon has done for AMD. Even with todays drop, we're up around 100% in about 4 months.

P.S. What's your home town football team?

Paul,

Q. If Microsoft sells a box for $150, including DVD and an 8 GB disk, how much profit does the CPU manufacturer make?

A. Nothing, but at least they avoid facing a second embarassing loss to AMD in one week.

On the other hand, AMD can use their resources to build processors which sell for more than the cost of an x-box. ;^)))

Paul the no fan with 1 GHz Coppermine, Re <<Up until 5:05 PM last night, EVERY MEDIA article in the press and EVERY POST on SI assumed that the AthWiper was a Done Deal design win for the X-BOX>>

And you kept saying that AMD will have to sell them for less than $30 or so and that is bad news for AMD. I guess Intel offered a better price.

<<<Who wudda thunk it?

Up until 5:05 PM last night, EVERY MEDIA article in the press and EVERY POST on SI assumed that the AthWiper was a Done Deal design win for the X-BOX - and this covered what - several months of speculation ?

Then, literally at the last minute, Joe Montana throws a touchdown pass - and the Good Guys win !>

It is a victory allright but a pretty ugly one.

Intel shouldn't have been behind on this one - supplying at the low-end with a built-in die size advantage should have been an easy win for Intel. Instead they fell behind and had to scramble at the end. This last minute thing will probably cost quite a bit in margins.

The biggest benefit from this deal for Intel might be early exposure into a high power gaming platform and the loss of momentum at AMD.

The biggest downside for Intel may be that AMD folks might develop a healthy bit of paranoia and become more battle hardened.

Competition is good.

RE: Intel's X-Box donation to M$, here's the facts:
1. Gaming Consoles is a new market for CPU companies and M$ is a new customer for CPU chips.
2. Intel will be selling CPU's to M$ for less than XX. XX is probably < $30. AMD knows what XX is.
3. Since the specifications for the XBox CPU state that it must have a 128K L1 cache, Intel will have more development expense than AMD to produce the chip
4. Take 2,3 together and Intel will be selling these CPU's to a new customer in a new market for less than the cost of production. They will be using their monopoly position in business computers to subsidize entry into a new market.

This is the definition of illegal monopolistic action.

If AMD decides to play this card, Intel will lose. The best way for AMD to play is for M$ to find out about a threatened lawsuit of Intel. A monopolist who is already in hot water (M$) can ill afford the publicity of aiding another monopolist. That wouldn't please the judge too much, don't you think?
