Did you see Bill Gates' presentation ?
Microsoft is simply applying the economics of the PC industry to the game console industry which has hitherto been a clubby place with comparitively little competition.

I expect this win2000 based console to be the win2000 of the game console industry - stable, leading platform which makes microsoft oodle of dough.
