Very well thought out post.

This is big news in Canada. The buyers of this technology
are bush pilots,guide resort operators,geologists in northern Canada,doctors in the jungles of Brazil,etc. These people come out into the "real" world for limited periods of time and then go back. They have no idea on the latest developments in technology.
They go to the trade shows and there is someone selling a Motoroya phone to a service that is soon to go out of business.
I hope Globalstar reaches out to these people that have been burned. I think it would be a huge marketing opportunity.
Like Gillette selling you the razor for below cost and soaking you for the blades

ALR, somewhere I seem to recall that at least some Iridium service providers are offering to buy back the Iridium phones if (when?) the service is terminated. I would think that might happen with most Iridium customers, perhaps either voluntarily on the part of the service provider, or after a bit of class action litigation.

If that should come to pass, then credits (rebates?) by G* to former Iridium users might need be no larger than the advertising budget per G* user already planned for year 2000. That would appear to be in the $150 to $200 region.

If that amount of incentive is necessary and adequate to recruit a former Iridium user, then G* and service provider management should be willing to offer it.

Perhaps we will see some such plan within the next few weeks. I agree that G* should have foreseen the Iridium demise and should have had a plan ready to announce. Perhaps they do have, and are awaiting the cessation of Iridium service before publicizing the offer.

Of course, one might argue that the number of Iridium users who will convert to G* would not be much increased by the offer of a rebate. I don't know how to assess the virtues of this argument, but one would hope some clever G* marketer or service provider would be able to get a handle on it.
