The paranoia was over the "domino effect" that never materialized, even after we pulled out.

Vietnam was Truman's fault. Instead of holding elections in Vietnam after WWII like we would do now, he gave the country back to France. The french screwed up by high taxes, that caused a revolt up north, and the French then left. Had truly fair elections been held, Vietnam (one country) would have been democratic and we would have been welcomed there.

This is something that FDR wanted to do.
