Dave,

If you think Intel's investors aren't going to take kindly to a drop in profits, wait until you see AMD's investors!

All indications point to a huge increase in AMD profits this year. Intel dropping prices at 800MHz will have little impact on AMD. That will be AMD's entry level clock speed in a couple of months.

I believe that Intel investors will understand the corporate strategy of holding, or gaining, market share by a carefully orchestrated product launch coupled with a short-term pricing strategy designed to make Intel speed and fabulous price synonomous. I can see the marketing campaign now!

Wars of attrition such as this make excellent business sense if you are sure you can last longer than the other guy and there is no third party who will swoop in and scoop up market share with a different solution altogether. I think Intel will plan very carefully on this point, but if the goal is not to kill AMD, just wound them severely, there is no better time or place to take a stand than this summer and into the Fall.

Also, watch for increased Intel/Rambus advertising....with Rambus portrayed to the "solution" to high speed computing bottlenecks. AMD does not yet have a corresponding one-word buzz solution to offer.

Now, before the bears get all hyped up, I am not saying Rambus is the best solution or any solution, I just think it makes for great marketing. Dell will eat it up.
