Re: "OK. IBM with their flashy SOI and copper. I wonder what they could do with a PIII, or a Willamette. Probably not much more than Intel does. IBM is morphing from Mother Blue into Mother Chip."

IBM has an extremely good process. They are a peer of Intel but IBM doesn't have to make 120+ million processors per year across multiple fabs. They can do some exotic things that they wouldn't do if they had the same commitments to meet that Intel does. As for SOI, just because Intel doesn't use it for high volume production doesn't necessarily mean they don't know how to do it.

Tony & Elmer,

I've been reading a lot of the propaganda about this SOI. Apparently we think it's 18 months ahead of anything else on the market. We are also being VERY selective about whos chips we'll fab. There's no way in hell we'll ever fab the UltraSparc. Aside from that, I guess we'd only do it for people we didn't percieve as a threat. That makes me wonder why the Alpha is the first customer. Not sure where Intel fits in here.
