Our latest mass murderer in Hawaii owned 27 legal registered guns. He only used one to kill 7 co-workers and attempt to kill another. He had seen psychiatrists, and was walking around loose for years. He is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. There is a debate among experts on whether he was legally insane. The law here forbids the mentally ill to own weapons. I think perhaps that if a mental clearance were required before a permit were issued, and it was strictly administered, perhaps having the mental clearance board to be made up of people who had lost close relatives to gunshot or had themselves been assaulted by weapons carrying people, he might have been denied the permit. If everyone had their tempers in control and were not extremely mentally ill, I think it would be OK for everyone to carry a weapon. We would need to keep the nuts from carrying, and would need a code duello. Under what conditions could we taunt others with our still concealed guns? When could we draw and flourish? When could we shoot to wound? To kill? I think it is useless to have people walking around with a weapon, particularly a concealed weapon. I much prefer to wear a gun on a belt, or under my arm or on my shoulder. I used regularly to wear an ordinary infantry sword when I was a kid. Everyone treated me with the greatest respect. I never had to draw it or cut anyone down. When I was a young man in South in the 1950's everyone assumed that all other men were armed. There were many fights, but only 20 per cent or so ended up in shootings, and only 10 per cent or so in killings. One could buy a 45 caliber (semi)automatic by mail for about $20. Too damned heavy to stick in your skivvies, and a shoulder holster was uncomfortable. Never had to shoot anyone, but brandished it couple of times and prevented a felony or so. I don't know what to conclude from this experience. I know of several times when I was threatened that had I been carrying I would have drawn and shot, if necessary. But in those instances I was just as aggressive unarmed and I wasn't killed. If I had had to kill the others guys or get shot myself it would have had little significance. He who lives by the sword or gun must certainly take his chances of dying by the sowrd or gun. I could never have much sympathy for those carrying guns who got killed. If you carry you need to develop a carrier's personality. Stay out of crowds. Avoid conflict. Sit with you face toward the door. Watch for sudden movements. If you don't carry there is little you can do about it so you can sit with your back to the door. If the guy wants to kill you he can walk around and shoot you in the face if he wishes. I think if almost everyone (especially kids) carried guns it would add a lot of spice to life. There should also be a law that after every shooting there should be a board to decide, under the circumstances, if the shoot was righteous. Evidence at the neighborhood hearing could be introduced that the victim was dirty, or obese, or insulting and annoyed the shooter. If the shooter could not justify the shooting, the audience could shoot him down.
