i<> The United States invented the Internet and the way to make in ubiquitous.

Hello Dan - I'm tired of reading jingoistic rants, especially when the rant is off base.

US DARPA had a hand funding multiple projects aimed at providing Uncle Sam a bomb proof (literally) computer network, starting in the late 60's. However, the internet, per se, didn't arrive until much later. www was invented at the CERN Labs in Geneva and taken up by academic institutions throughout Europe. (I was using JANET and Usenet in the UK 15 years ago).

GSM is a Government supported boondoggle
The whole internet started off as a government boondoggle, on both sides of the pond.

Your criticism of the state of the 'phone system in Europe is misplaced. I could only connect at 26000 up in Santa Barbara last weekend!

I agree with your criticism of the expense of connecting, but not the quality. BT (in the UK) charges for a local 'phone call, unlike here in the US, where it is free.
However, BSkyB (a UK satellite TV company) is exploiting this by offering free e-mail to subscribers through a modified set top box. Rupert Murdoch is a cunning bugger.

Mobile 'phones have taken off in Europe for the same reason they have taken off over here, they are convenient. It has
nothing to to with antiquated perceptions of poor quality 'phone systems.

The Europeans are behind in mobile phones from the start
That is nonsense. MOT and ERICY were field trialling GSM in Europe during the late eighties and early nineties. Major digital networks were in place in Germany and the UK years before their counterparts in the US.

Great post! The point is that free markets and capitalism will result in more innovation and efficiency. As the world moves toward capitalism the best products will win.

Dan,

<<We do not subsidize or create false economies that allow one industry to flourish while others suffer>>

Wonderful rant and very on-topic to the China goings on. I would add there were more internet companies brought public in the US than the total number of companies brought public in the entire continent of Euroland since the reign of King Charlemagne. I'm hoping China has identified this glaring structural difference and continues to move toward licensing US technology were it does not exist in China and allowing for the creation and expansion of domestic companies.

We do not subsidize or create false economies that allow one industry to flourish while others suffer.

Are you kidding??

What do you think Greenspan is doing?
What do you think he did when that one investment company wiht Nobel prize winners in economy got into multibillion dollar trouble?
What do you think tax rates do?
Have you seen the import tariffs on cotton?

We regulate spectrum and utilities with the good of the consumer

So if we do it its good for the people. If they do it, they are a bunch of meddling jerks who dont know whats good for them and their people !!

How high is our horse anyways? And when do we get off that high horse?
