Bob, RE: If McData goes belly up, it doesn't hurt EMC or it's shareholders in any financial way. Of course, those of us still holding McData shares might be unhappy but, because it was a spin off, it was "free" money anyway.

That makes the assumption that the market is currently valuing the McData part of EMC at zero. That's a little bit too far of a reach for me.

The main reason that I see for the spinoff is that McData has growth opportunities out there that would not exist if it was a part of EMC, namely sales to EMC competitors. Other reasons, i.e. those that focus on valuation or risk, are much more minor on my list and are dependent upon the assumption that the market is much more inefficient than I am willing to accept.

...in a market that is already dominated by one player (Brocade) with another player trying to make a charge (Ancor).... They can see that Vixel and Gadzooks are having trouble penetrating the market As an EMC shareholder and as a big believer in the future of fibre channel I think they made the right decision.

Hi; hope you don't mind a lurker's questions.

Does this mean that you reckon Brocade is a great long-term investment, as it is the Market Leader with first mover advantage? Does Brocade have proprietary architecture to its products, or does it simply outexecute the other guys in the field? Appreciate your input.
