The part about the bastard child is ringing false. Why would he lost custody of the child if the child welfare authorities found out about him? Where is the mother? Where do he and the child live? How old is the child?

Clearly, you are enabling your friend. If this continues you will become co-dependent.

These "heart attacks" are probably attention getting devices. He needs to be in a group situation more often. There are 12 step programs for people like him.

If he doesn't want to go to those, you could loosen him up by sending him a drinking allowance. It would be good for his health and save you some money.
