Hi Kemble,

In a note today, Ashok Kumar basically stated that DELL's hopes in storage are dead. Note that Kumar has DELL at a 'Strong Buy'.
ºWe belive that ConvergeNet acquisition is a total debacle.
ºWe expect the Company will retrench to be a reseller of third-party solutions.

Dell cannonballed into the storage pool last summer when it acquired CovergeNet for $380 million. But there was a small problem--the pool was empty. Now a year later, Dell is finding it has nothing to show for this effort.

The info was from a GVTucker post. Similar concerns about DELL's storage initiatives have been raised in the past by Rudedog. It is one thing if convergenet flops....quite another if DELL's whole storage initiatives do. DELL's web site regarding storage options is as complete as ever,

dell.com,

so we'll have to wait and see.

Last I heard was convergenet was delayed until the fall. I'll try to find the source. I would love to know how Kumar arrived at his conclusion.

When we mountain biking the Gunks????

Happy Austin Bullrides,
Kaka

Kemble re: ...And, this is current!

By any chance do you remember the date of the information below? Looking for a response from Dell for Ashok Kumar's convergenet obituary unless this is it below. Many thanks.
Best,
Mike

"Helping to aid in Dell's push into the enterprise systems market, the company
will make a number of new product introductions in the storage area in the
second half of this year, including a entry level NAS offering (September), a replacement to its mid range PowerVault (November) and beta shipments of its ConvergeNet centralized shared storage (with about 6 customers beginning in late August) with volume roll out in early calendar 2001."

Unless I get anything else from DELL I'm going with this.

Kemble you were right. It looks like Ashok Kumar in jumping the gun on a rumor got in front of the gun and will not be the lead on where Dell is going, Niles is the man now. Still, Ashok is a thoughtful analyst. I think ConvergeNet may be the antidote to the Itanium delay.

Best,
Mike (quickly fluxing back to a raging Dell bull)
