Andreas,

<They didn't say that Durons would ship in July, they only stated that Compaq and other OEMs would introduce Duron systems. AMD never gave a specific date.>

Check Duron release from June.

<I think it isn't very surprising that major OEMs like Compaq or HP need more time than a month or two to design a completely new system with a brand new infrastructure (Socket A). If Duron was Slot-based we probably would have seen SDKs sooner. But with the new infrastructure (and the delays from Via) it was only natural that the whole process would take more time. >

I would say that you are defending pathetic performance. I am not sure I have anything to say here.

<I don't think it is a good idea to blame your partner on a conference call of a "earnings shortfall". >

What "earnings shortfall"? And, who is talking about "blaming your partner"?

All AMD needed to do was acknowledge the problem instead of issuing a glorious press release about how good the infrastructure support was. Showing a corrective action plan would have built the credibility - which this management BADLY needs.

Chuck

P.S.: I have said all I want to say on this. I am done with this topic.

Andreas, Re: "I think it isn't very surprising that major OEMs like Compaq or HP need more time than a month or two to design a completely new system with a brand new infrastructure (Socket A). If Duron was Slot-based we probably would have seen SDKs sooner."

Are we seeing Socket A TBirds from major OEMs yet? I would have thought AMD would provide samples to allow for verification in advance of the release.

This past year has seen a series of major changes in MPU products (processors, chipsets, etc) and there are still more to come. It doesn't surprise me that the transitions are slow as you have to move out the old product and verify the new combinations.

AAPL has this problem even worse due to their less frequent product refreshes which devalue the old products. In response to another's question on how to balance out capital gains to avoid the tax hit -- AAPL bought Jobs a jet with some ARMHY profits and some options, 10M options @ $43.50, split-adjusted.
