WOW!

Re <<The PC market outlook is strong and AMD is on track to meet its goal of doubling shipments of seventh generation PC processors to 3.6 million units in this quarter, and again doubling shipments to 7.2 million units in the fourth quarter.>>

Oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh, that turns me on! I guess I was worrying for nothing.

3.6 Million of the Athlon core and not a whole lot of it will be Duron! Good numbers for Q3 is in the bag and with all the duron system which should be shipped in seasonaly strong Q4 and release of DDR, Camero, Mustang....

<The 1.1GHz, 1GHz, 950MHz, 900MHz, 850 MHz, and 800 MHz AMD Athlon processors are priced at $853, $612, $460, $350, $282, and $215 respectively, each in 1,000-unit quantities. The 700MHz, 650MHz, and 600MHz AMD Duron processors are priced at $138, $103, and $79 respectively, each in 1,000-unit quantities.>

Sure looks like the yield rumors have been true. Perhaps some people were looking for perfection from AMD. That, they haven't delivered but I'd say they're doing quite well. I still think AMD could have jumped in to curb some of the share loss over the last few weeks.

Even with those price cuts - ASPs should be just fine in Q3 and Q4.

AMD market segmentation:

I was happy to see the "hole" in the processor spread at 750MHz. Obviously, all Thunderbirds binsplit at 800MHz and above, else AMD would keep this Athlon speed grade for sale. I was also happy to see that the Duron 750 is a no-show for now, since this part would just sap Athlon sales.

Once Duron volumes get going, I don't know how Intel's Celeron can possibly compete. They will be forced to go to 100MHz FSB, or else risk Celeron generating "K6" style ASP's, with Duron taking the higher spots.

This battle is the biggest wild card I see right now. If Intel shifts up Celeron to 100MHz FSB, it poses a huge cannibalization risk. If they don't, AMD has an invitation to the business market.

Intel won't be safe until the 0.13u coppermines with 200MHz FSB come out in the 3rd quarter of 2001. Then then can raise the celeron bar, and fill in the 1.1 - 1.3GHz product hole. But for that to happen Intel needs to move to 0.13u without copper, and add copper a few months later. Since these clearly must be parallel efforts, (given that copper is in Intel's road map for next year, and that Intel won't qualify a 0.13 Al line and then turn around and redo it with copper) the big questions are:

A) Can Intel transition to .13 and copper at the same time,

b) And can anyone do .13 without copper? IBM says no. MOT says no.

Are there any process people who care to comment?

Kash,

<AMD Celebrates One Year Anniversary of AMD Athlon Processor and Commences Shipments of 1.1GHz Processors
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug 14, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- >

Smart PR! The stock seems to be shooting for 63 as I type. Finally the PR guys have done something worthwhile.

A price cut without announcing the 1.1G could have gone down as a negative by some of the folks. In the context of 1.1G "shipment" announcement that sounds good.

And, none of the Duron750 and Athlon1100 ammo has been used so we can expect couple of more press releases and reiterations in the next month - this time with real systems availability and customer names.

It is also strong message to state the 800-1100MHz range on Athlon, establishing 800MHz as the entry level.
