One thing I better clear up.

I mentioned T and use of the MACD histogram. Well, the MACD on SI that I usually look at is plotted as a histogram, but is not the MACD histogram. So, I shouldn't have "technically" said histogram in my first post, and before any of the true technicians start pointing this out, I will.

My mention of T was simply illustrative and of course everyone has their own investment style. My simple point was that T is a trade based on the chart and my somewhat contrary view that might or might not work out. That's all, no other reason. Because I know little about the fundamentals it is the kind of stock I will give little room on the downside before exiting the trade.

Sorry to waste everyone's time on this, but I did want to clarify it. And please everyone, don't even think of buying T based on my own highly personal views about this trade.

Gee, ever feel as if it's better just to say nothing at all.
Best regards.

STU...very nice post.

Reminds me of myself. Lots of details different about our lives of course, but generally I agree with your conclusions.
The Macroeconomics is KEY in small to mid cap investing. If the Tech edge represented by the company is ahead of the curve, you sit and wait. By way of example CAMP and MRVC are perfect descriptions of the Macro economics just now crossing into their spheres of influence.

FYI a great hidden Gallium Arsenide play is TRW. In addition they have INPH laser foundry and a new generation of devices that follow on the Gas product family.

Thanks for your post, it was a good read.

RE: Buy and Hold

Stu,

Like you I bought my first shares of MRVC on 2/9/97 and haven't sold a share. I agree with your lessons. An interest and aptitude in things technical is very useful. I routinely talk to investors who only buy what they know (Merck, Home Depot, etc) and have heard about investing in high tech, but avoid it.

To your lessons, I would add the importance of understanding the trading dynamics and the financial strategies many high tech companies are subjected to. It frequently defies conventional buy-sell wisdom. For example, one of the stocks I owned fell to $1.00/share due to high risk financing that allowed the investors to sell the stock short. There was no way to figure if it would be delisted. Two years later it was $90/share.

MRVC like a lot of other tech shares has been volatile. Some can trade that. I just grin and bear it. Getting a general idea of what can happen behind the scenes is useful.

George D.

>>I recall when I first posted back in late Summer 97, Sector welcomed me to the thread and guaranteed me a double in the next year. Well it didn't quite work out that way; but in three years it's worked out much better.<<

That's the rub here....has been for me anyway...finding something great, but being way, way early!
My investing started in '93 with my first purchase of a stock instead of a mutual fund....it was Cisco, so I'm not complaining, and have spun off a lot of money to invest elsewhere. From readings in Individual Investor back in '95 to '97, I picked up some names I was very interested in, like MRVC, CUBE, Human Genome, Wind River Systems, Oracle. The best thing I did was to set up some tracking portfolios on these stocks and others, so I could see what the stock did over time. I traded in and out of Cube, and have done ok there, but never bought MRVC until it got wacked down to around $8. Then I jumped in (shoulda bought more), and have hung on since. How can I complain about this? I can't, and don't have the time to do much 'day' trading, but I do buy when things get cheap. I won't sell yet, the story is just unfolding (finally) and we are about to get discovered, IMO, so hanging on is my strategy. My best investments have used this strategy....track a stock, then buy when it gets whacked. It's worked great with WIND, Oracle, Trimble, Cube, and others. Human Genome got away from me though...too many stocks, so little time! So, now recently, I'm getting into trading more often with JDSU, to ride that cycle up and down, but it takes more time and concentration!
I used to be pissed at those stupid analysts who would whack a stock and make the price dive, but I finally saw the light and view those episodes of stock manipulation as gold nuggets. So, I'm a buy and holder (Still have a big chunk of Cisco), a buy low, sell higher, and now a frequent trader!
I do DD and have lurked on several boards for many years, but my best trick is those tracking portfolios!
So, it seems that whatever path lead us all here is not as important than the fact that we are here....So, no complaining guys....the stock is above $70 already!
Back to lurking,
CMM
PS........I also got some LDP when it was on sale recently, and some Marconi too.

Uh, Stu

I said MRVC would double? That isn't like me, as I like to encourage people to do their OWN DD.

I didn't remember saying that - and it is obviously important to me. Now, we are talking about THREE YEARS AGO, so memory becomes imperfect.

I went back and checked the posts. I don't see where I ever said that at all.

I did see a post to you where I said ASND would double within a year. That proved wrong too, as ASND was trading around $35 at the time and didn't double until about 16 months later - so I was off by about four months. <g>

Of course it went on to break $105 and was ultimately acquired by LU so you could have had a triple there in under two years.

I did get my double in FORE, and it went on to be acquired by Marconi - which is why Marconi is strong in ATM now.

BTW, CWNT would be a very good fit with Marconi - not to start any rumors.

This may be a nit to most, but I take pride in what I post, so I want to correct inaccuracies. No biggie (except to me).
