Tony,

The big question with P4 at this point is how well it will scale in MHz. A 20-28 stage pipe must be designed to produce a large jump in MHz, because of the IPC degradation. Time will tell if the Willy team balanced the pipe properly.

So how come AMD is the only component company in the universe that is lowering prices (a lot) in this amazing tech product boom? Do they like giving money back to their customers?

I think the demand for $1000 CPUs is very low, and AMD is making enough of them that so it is cost effective to sell more at a lower price.

Scumbria

There are no price cuts, just better bins and new speed grades.

You definitely know your CPU stuff, but it was common knowledge that a longer pipeline is not as good in IPC as a shorter one, but can make up for it in overall performance because of cycle time.

Tony, your logic implies that one can judge a CPU by the length of its pipeline. Scumbria has made specific points to claim that Willy may not be well balanced.
