MM's route is the safest route to take. That's what I do, and have been doing it this way for a year or more. I gave up tape drives years ago.

I have two hard drives, 10GB is my main drive, the other 20GB for back up and storing images. (both are 7200 RPM) I use Drive Image 3.02, just upgraded from 2.02.

It's safer spreading your data over 2 drives as if one dies, the other will still contain your data.

In case of theft, back up critical data to ZIP, JAZ or CDR.

Anytime I install software, I take an image of the drive, so if I don't like the software, I just restore the image off the second drive. Only takes about 15-20 minutes to restore a 4.5GB partition with Drive Image.

Uninstalling does not restore your computer to the same way it was before you install software. Sometimes installing a piece of software can screw up your computer for good.

hi don

yes, you should go with a second drive. looks like you had already arrived at that conclusion on your own anyway. <g>

i think the 5400 is probably fine for a secondary drive. the more i ponder it, the more inclined i am to keep the 15gb 5400rpm maxtor i just bought. i doubt that there is anything that i will be doing in which i will ever be able to notice any type of performance hit when compared to the ibm 7200 factory install i am currently running. maybe in defragging speed.

but using one drive partitioned for back ups is not really sound thinking, imo.

i have a lot of learning curve in front of me with these three new powerquest programs and the prospects of installing a second drive. one of my near-term goals is to install win2000 pro on either a partition or on the second drive. and i want to put win95 on a partition too, just for grins. all of this will seriously take time, for me.

anyway, good luck, and let us know what you do

:)

On my system, Drive Image compresses the image file to a size about half the original. (327meg into 162meg image)

So, you may not be as cramped for space as it first appears.

Cheers, PW.
